Did You Know?

Energy efficient products typically have a higher price tag than their lower efficiency counterparts, but the amount saved on utility bills will most likely make up the difference and more.

Heating and cooling account for about 56% of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, making it the largest energy expense for most homeowners. Water heating, appliances and electronics, and lighting are other large energy users.

ENERGY STAR® started as a labeling project between the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to identify energy efficient products. In 2008, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $19 billion on their utility bills.

The yellow and black Energy Guide labels that appear on most energy-using products can be helpful in comparing the estimated energy use for similiar products.
